Manhattan
âTHEREâS NO WAY we can make the switch during the gala,â Gaige declared, two hours and three pots of coffee later.
After much cajoling, Gaige, Molly, and Charles had promised to table the topic of the prima we found in the jewelry until after the ball. As much as I longed to test the stone, talk to a Founder about it, or hack a system to find J. Jacobson, we couldnât do any of that from Manhattan. Cyrus was back anyway, and I wasnât ready to share our discovery with my boss just yet. The only thing I could do was concentrate on the mission at hand.
Of course, my lecture about focusing was easier said than done. While we studied the security protocols that would be in place while the artifact was on display, I struggled to keep my head in the game. When it wasnât the prima alloy in my necklace, it was Trista who floated in and out of my thoughts.
Focus, Stassi, I mentally coached. Itâs only twenty-four hours. Youâve got this.
âNot to mention, the infrared laser cage is tricky,â Molly was saying. âEven stillâ¦if we donât have to risk going back, we shouldnât.â
See? I thought. If you donât focus, youâll end up losing an arm. How will you clap when Gaige gets shot down after delivering a cheesy pickup line?
âBut no matter when we make the switch, the cage will be a problem, correct?â Charles asked, furrowing his brow.
âIf we go back when there arenât several hundred people milling around, weâll have time and it wonât be a deal breaker,â Gaige replied.
They all looked at me, like I was supposed to cast the deciding vote. I nodded, quickly considering both arguments. âWell, infiltrating a place like the Manhattan Pearl Society is difficult. Considering weâre invited tomorrow night, doubling back would usually be an amateur move. But the infrared cage will take timeâmore than weâll have at any point during the evening.â
âAfter it is,â Molly said, slumping back in her chair. She turned to me. âAny ideas on entry?â
With that, we were off to more brainstorming, eliminating possibilities as quickly as they were proposed. We were all frustrated by the time we ran through the options, and we sounded more like children bickering than skilled thieves debating between airshafts and skylights. Finally, Cyrus declared a timeout from heist planning.
âWhy donât you take Charles out for lunch?â my boss quietly suggested to me. Out of earshot, Molly and Gaige were still arguingâthis time over the best prawn tacos in Manhattan. âSomewhere close. It would be good for you both to get a bit of a break.â
Lunch with Charles was low on the list of things I wanted to do at this very moment. After the trial, life was supposed to be easier, calmer. At least, thatâs what everyone told me. But seeing Trista had complicated it all over again, in an entirely new way. I didnât even know why that encounter made me feel bad; that was the most aggravating part of all.
